Ideas we got from

We got our ideas from alot of stuffs. Like Singapore flag, Merlion, Malay Culture, Singapore river and Vanda Miss Joaquim- our national flower.

Singapore Flag

We used majority white from the national flag. White signifies pervading and everlasting purity and virtue. We replaced the red with pink instead because we feel that red is too striking and bright to go with white. But deep in our hearts, the meaning of the pink on our costume still resembles the red colour on the national flag. And red symbolises universal brotherhood and equality of man. We used the colour white for our headband and the colour pink and white for the dress.

Vanda Miss Joaquim

The Vanda Miss Joaquim, an orchid variety, is Singapore's national flower. It is an indigenous hybrid between the Vanda teres and the Vanda hookerana and was first discovered in the garden of Miss Agnes Joaquim in 1893. It was registered within the same year. It was selected particularly because of its hardy and resilient qualities and its ability to bloom throughout the year. These are characteristics which reflect Singapore's quest for progress and excellence in all aspects of life. We chose it because it resembles our country and the people living in Singapore. We should be proud of it. We used it as a brooch and a decoration for the hair.

The merlion

The merlion was designed by Mr Fraser Brunner, a curator of the Van Kleef Aquarium, the lion head represents the lion spotted by Prince Sang Nila Utama when he re-discovered Singapura. The fish tail of the Merlion symbolises the ancient city of Temasek (meaning “sea” in Javanese) by which Singapore was known before the Prince named it “Singapura” (meaning “lion” (singa) “city” (pura) in Sanskrit), and represents Singapore’s humble beginnings as a fishing village. The merlion was originally located at the Merlion Park by the Esplanade Bridge. Today, the Merlion has found a new home just 120 metres away from its original location, adjacent to one Fullerton. We chose the Merlion because it is a well known icon in Singapore. We used it a bracelet, necklace and a belt.

Singapore River

The Singapore River was the lifeline of Singapore where our first immigrants eked out a meagre living and saw Singapore transform from an obscure little fishing village to a great seaport. In our costume, the dress looked crumpled as it gives the look of the waves of the Singapore river.

Heyhey all ! This blog is set up by Fion , Larissa , Shafiqah and Destin . Basically , this blog is all about our Literature project , making a costume for Miss/Mr Singapore . First of all , I'm going to introduce us to you :D

Fion : Group leader , surpervise and help in work , can be fun and serious at times .
